35 years with one goal: The best clinical research

The Outcomes Research Consortium celebrates 35 years of cutting-edge research.

Daniel I. Sessler, MD, has published more than 1,000 papers that have been cited more than 117,000 times. So, when he calls the science represented at this year’s Outcomes Research Consortium session “spectacularly strong,” attendees can be sure they’re in for a memorable event.

Dr. Sessler is the Founder and Director of the Outcomes Research Consortium, the world’s largest and most productive anesthesia research organization. Remarkably, the consortium publishes a complete paper every other day, for a total exceeding 2,300 papers. The consortium is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, adding another element of excitement to the session “Late-Breaking Results From the Outcomes Research Consortium.”

“The consortium late-breaking trials session will be a highlight of the entire annual meeting,” Dr. Sessler said. “We will present nine major unpublished studies, including six trials that each randomized more than 1,000 patients.”

One presentation will focus on IMPROVE-multi, a major trial of intraoperative blood pressure control on postoperative mortality and morbidity, which will be simultaneously published in JAMA. A second trial of intraoperative blood pressure control — again with more than 1,000 randomized patients — will also be presented. The consortium will also present three major studies of delirium, a large trial of hetastarch and renal injury, and a trial of a novel treatment for ARDS.

The Outcomes Research Consortium session will take place 8-10 a.m. on Sunday, October 12, in Room 303A, Ballroom Level. Dr. Sessler will serve as co-moderator along with Alparslan Turan, MD, the consortium’s Associate Director.

This year’s topics and speakers will be:

  • Intraoperative Blood Pressure Management and Cardiovascular Events | Bingcheng Zhao, MD
  • IMPROVE-multi: A Trial of Individualized Perioperative Blood Pressure Management | Bernd Saugel, MD
  • A Trial of Intranasal Dexmedetomidine-Esketamine | Dong-Xin Wang, MD, PhD
  • Cerebral Small-Vessel Disease and Postoperative Delirium | Peiying Li, MD, PhD
  • Covert Strokes and Delirium After Noncardiac Surgery | Yuming Peng, MD, PhD
  • Safety of Starches in Perioperative Medicine: The PHOENICS Trial | Wolfgang Buhre, MD
  • PROTHOR: Low vs. High PEEP for One-Lung Ventilation | Marcelo Gama de Abreu, MD
  • Hypoxia-Inducible Factors During ARDS | Holger Eltzschig, MD, PhD
  • COMBO Oropharyngeal Airway in Sedated Gastrointestinal Endoscopy | Diansan Su, MD, PhD
