ANESTHESIOLOGY® 2024: We’re glad you’re here!
The City of Brotherly Love.

Welcome to Philadelphia! There might be no better city or time of year to welcome the thousands of anesthesia professionals who’ve gathered for the specialty’s premier learning and networking event. Just as the city of Philadelphia strives to preserve its rich history while keeping an eye on the future, ANESTHESIOLOGY 2024 promises to deliver attendees the tried-and-true programming you’ve come to expect, along with new resources and sessions that we hope you’ll come to love.
Here's a snapshot of notable highlights and what’s new for 2024:
The City of Brotherly Love: Philadelphia needs no introduction on the American stage. It’s one of our most important historical cities. Its educational institutions are unmatched. At 341 years old, it continues to grow and reinvent itself. And for annual meeting attendees, it’s also eminently accessible – with everything from world-class museums to shopping to fine dining nearby the convention center and your hotel. The city is bathed in medical history: American’s first hospital (Pennsylvania Hospital) was founded here, and Thomas Jefferson University is celebrating its bicentennial in 2024, having arguably produced more physicians and surgeons than any other medical school in the country.
Premier Speakers: Our annual Keynote Lecture is more than just a talk – it’s an event. In 2024, we welcome Sam Quinones, an author and journalist who will speak on “The Opioid Crisis in America: What This Means for Anesthesiologists and Pain Physicians.” Mr. Quinones will explore the complex factors that contributed to the current opioid crisis and offer insights on managing it. The always-anticipated Rovenstine Lecture will be delivered by Mary Dale Peterson, MD, MSHCA, FACHE, FASA, who led ASA as President in 2020 at the height of the COVID pandemic. Dr. Peterson will deliver an intimate lecture on “Our Finest Hour: How Anesthesiologists Saved Countless Lives during the COVID-19 Pandemic.” Pioneering surgeon Henrik Kehlet, MD, PhD, the “father of ERAS,” will deliver this year’s Severinghaus Lecture, “Perioperative Medicine: A Look from the Other Side.” Dr. Kehlet has devoted his career to improving surgical outcomes, and in his talk he will underscore the importance of a personalized approach to ERAS.
Medical Students, Residents, and Fellows: ASA is more committed than ever to delivering resources to its members through every stage of their careers. Medical student attendance is increasing year over year, and ASA is enhancing offerings for them, including the redesigned and popular Residency Program Open House. On top of their own dedicated tracks and governance meetings, residents and fellows can take advantage of subspecialty network events and sessions on financial and business literacy.
Kids Play: Our on-site childcare program for kids aged 6 weeks to 12 years is back by very popular demand, for the third year in a row. The program is available at the convention center from Saturday through Tuesday. Space is limited, so please inquire about availability as soon as possible if you haven’t already.
Unlimited Opportunities to Connect: The Exhibit Hall is where every thread of the annual meeting intersects. There will be more "Hot Spots” than ever in 2024, including:
Center Stage – Industry leaders will be on hand to discuss the latest innovations in medicine
Live with TopMedTalk – An interview-style program featuring discussions of cutting-edge literature
Meet-Up Lounge – The name says it all … meet old friends, new contacts, and a variety of special interest groups
International Pavilion – THE meeting spot for colleagues from around the world
ASA Resource Center – Got a question about the meeting or need some ASA swag? Start here
Career Center + Headshot Studio – Another go-to location for networking, with bonus free professional headshots
